Guwahati : At a time when global uncertainties and geopolitical disruptions are placing energy security at the forefront of national priorities, Cairn, Vedanta Oil & Gas is contributing to India’s growing need for reliable, domestic energy from its Hazarigaon field in Assam, Northeast. For the demerged company, focused on increasing oil & gas production in India, it remains committed to unlocking the country’s resources to build a more resilient and self-reliant energy future.
Reaching a significant milestone this month, during the extended well testing (EWT) at its Hazarigaon asset, Cairn recorded its highest-ever gas production of 178,361 standard cubic meters per day, highlighting the asset’s capabilities to drive production from Northeast. For FY26, the asset maintained an average gas production of approximately 102,000 scm/day during EWT, reflecting consistent performance alongside peak output. With an estimated recovery potential of 2 million boe/11.76 BCF (billion cubic feet) of gas, the field represents a meaningful contribution to India’s domestic energy basket.
The Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for the Northeast continues to guide the company’s efforts to unlock the region’s vast energy potential and drive regional development. Through its Discovered Small Fields (DSF) block, Cairn has emerged as a key player in the region’s evolving energy landscape. As the first company in the Northeast to monetise gas—enabled by strong collaboration with the Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL), it has helped establish a foundation for a gas-based ecosystem.
Gas production from the field is already making a meaningful impact across sectors. Since 2023, it has supplied gas to tea estates through AGCL, driving a shift from coal to cleaner fuel. It also powers 100 CNG buses in Guwahati, supporting the state’s clean mobility efforts. During EWT, Cairn continues to supply gas to Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) through AGCL for captive power generation, further strengthening industrial energy access in the region.
Cairn continues to operate responsibly, ensuring zero routine gas flaring and efficient resource utilisation. From supporting tea gardens to enabling cleaner transport and powering industry, its work in Assam reflects steady progress. Guided by its philosophy of Protect, Preserve, Produce, Cairn continues to deliver energy responsibly while advancing an inclusive and sustainable future.
