Bharatanatyam Artist Apeksha Niranjan Revives Forgotten India–Poland World War II Humanitarian Story Through Cultural Project
A powerful artistic collaboration celebrating humanity, compassion, and the extraordinary historical bond between India and Poland
Acclaimed Indian Bharatanatyam artist Apeksha Niranjan is currently touring Poland as part of Dzieci Maharadży: Maharaja’s Children – A Passage of Kindness and Respect, a unique Polish–Indian cultural initiative that revives one of history’s most remarkable stories of compassion, resilience, and cross-cultural friendship.
The project is a special collaboration between Apeksha Niranjan and Polish author, screenwriter and cultural historian Monika Kowaleczko-Szumowska, built around a lesser-known yet extraordinary chapter of World War II that connected India and Poland in a deeply human way.
At the height of the Second World War, when thousands of Polish families were displaced after being deported to Siberia, India became an unexpected place of refuge. In an act of extraordinary humanitarian generosity, Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja, fondly remembered as The Good Maharaja, along with the Rajaram III, opened their princely states to Polish women and children fleeing the war.
These Indian rulers, along with local communities, offered shelter, education, protection, and dignity to displaced Polish refugees during one of history’s darkest periods. Their compassion created a bond of gratitude and friendship between India and Poland that continues to be remembered generations later.
Through an immersive blend of classical Indian dance, literature, film, photography, and storytelling, Maharaja’s Children aims to preserve and reintroduce this remarkable humanitarian legacy to modern audiences while encouraging reflection on empathy, solidarity, and global responsibility in times of crisis.
For Apeksha Niranjan, whose artistic journey has consistently focused on cultural storytelling and using dance as a bridge between histories and communities, the project carries deep emotional significance.
Speaking about the initiative, Apeksha shares “Stories like these remind us that humanity has always been our greatest strength. This project is deeply personal because it represents India not just through culture, but through compassion — celebrating a moment in history where kindness transcended borders and created a lasting bond between two nations.
Currently underway across Poland, the cultural journey has already engaged audiences in multiple cities, with upcoming presentations continuing this month in Białystok and Warsaw, where audiences are experiencing this moving historical narrative through an artistic dialogue between India and Poland.
More than a historical tribute, Maharaja’s Children serves as a reminder that acts of kindness during moments of crisis can leave legacies far beyond their time. The project also draws contemporary relevance by encouraging reflection on humanitarian responses in today’s world and reinforcing the universal values of compassion, hospitality, resilience, and mutual respect.
Together, Apeksha Niranjan and Monika Kowaleczko-Szumowska have created a meaningful cultural bridge that transforms a forgotten chapter of wartime history into a living artistic dialogue — one that continues to strengthen friendship and understanding between India and Poland.
Through this unique collaboration, Apeksha Niranjan continues to represent India on the global cultural stage while bringing forward a story the world deserves to remember.
