Ayodhya: Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher offered prayers at the Ram Mandir here on Wednesday and openly addressed the ongoing donation controversy, stating that “what happened is wrong” and “it shouldn’t have happened.”

Kher, who has been closely associated with culturally significant projects, visited the revered temple to seek divine blessings ahead of the shoot of his new film. While expressing his devotion, the actor did not shy away from commenting on the sensitive issue that has gripped national attention in recent weeks.

“What happened was wrong; it shouldn’t have happened,” Kher said, referring to the alleged irregularities in temple donations. He, however, urged people not to blame Sanatan Dharma or Lord Ram for the actions of individuals. “Those who have done this, they should definitely be caught. But there should be no blame on Sanatan or Ramji,” he added.

The remarks come amid reports of missing cash bundles from devotee offerings at the Ram Mandir, prompting a Special Investigation Team probe, an FIR, and resignations within the temple trust. The controversy has triggered political debates, with calls for greater transparency in the handling of donations, even as temple authorities have defended the overall audit and utilization of funds.

Kher’s visit carried a dual purpose. Besides seeking blessings, the actor announced the imminent start of shooting for his upcoming film Shri Ram Bhoomi in Ayodhya.

“Our new film, Shri Ram Bhoomi, is about to start shooting in Ayodhya for the next 10-12 days. I have come here to seek the blessings of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman. I have come here to pray for their health and peace,” he told reporters at the temple.

The film, directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, explores the struggles, perseverance, and historical journey behind the construction of the Ram Temple. It stars Anupam Kher in a lead role alongside Ritwik Bhowmik and Amruta Khanvilkar, with Zee Studios involved in production. The project is being described as a narrative rooted in faith, history, and the spirit of homecoming.

For Kher, beginning the shoot in Ayodhya after seeking the Lord’s blessings holds deep symbolic value. The 70-year-old actor, celebrated for his powerful portrayals in films that often touch upon social and cultural themes, views this as a spiritually significant moment.

His balanced response to the donation issue — condemning the wrongdoing while safeguarding the sanctity of faith — has resonated with many observers who see it as a mature voice amid polarized discussions.

As cameras prepare to roll in the holy city, Shri Ram Bhoomi is expected to bring the emotional and devotional saga of the Ram Mandir to the silver screen. Kher’s presence in Ayodhya today not only marks the spiritual commencement of the project but also highlights the intersection of cinema, culture, and contemporary events in one of India’s most revered destinations.
