6 Cong MLAs to join BJP in Assam on December 26

GUWAHATI : After West Bengal, there is going to be a big game of politics ahead of the Assam Assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Guwahati on a three-day visit on December 26 amidst the summer of Assembly elections in Assam. It is now reported that Amit Shah will visit Assam on December 26. There are many existing Congress MLAs who are being charged and may join the BJP. A senior Assam BJP MLA, co-leader said that the BJP is likely to join the presence of several sitting Congress MLAs including former cabinet minister Amit Shah.

Former cabinet minister and current Congress MLA Ajanta Neg and some other Congress MLAs and leaders will join the BJP, he said. He further said that Amit Shah will attend some party meetings and take stock of the party’s election preparedness in the state before the assembly elections. Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has lost his guardian in the Assam Pradesh Congress following his death. In Assam, the Congress party’s confidence has started to grow under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Congress MLAs from Assam are envisaging to join the BJP. A senior BJP official from Assam said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Assam and North East on December 26, at which time the Union Home Minister will address a major public meeting. In this public meeting, 6 to 7 Congress MLAs are likely to join the BJP. The Congress MLA, who joined the BJP, includes former Congress minister Ajanta Gueung, Rozlina Turki, Rajdeep Gwala, MLA Nandita Das and no AIUDF, Congress MLA. It is mentioned that the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has  removed its MLA Anjata Niyog from an important post of the party organisation. Niyog had met Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and convener of the North Eastern Democratic Alliance, Himanta Biswa Sarma, two days ago. The move comes amid speculation that a four-time MLA from Golaghat and former state minister may join the BJP.

According to an order issued by the party’s state unit last night, Niyog has been removed from the post of District Congress Committee of Golaghat with immediate effect. “The decision has the approval of the All India Congress Committee,” said the two-line order without giving any reason for his removal from office. When the General Secretary (Organization) of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee said that disciplinary action has been taken against the MLA for “anti-party activities for the last few days”. Sources said, niyog, who has been identified as a strong leader in Upper Assam, is likely to join the BJP on 26th or 27th December during the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the state. Niyog had a meeting at his official residence from Sonowal in the presence of Sarma on Thursday. The Congress MLA, however, had said that he had met the chief minister and senior BJP leader to discuss issues related to his constituency. Sources said, about 100 Congress workers, including several block chairmen of Golaghat assembly constituency along with the MLA, are also likely to join the BJP. In Assam, assembly elections are due in March-April next year. In the current 126-member assembly, the BJP is the largest party with 60 MLAs while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front have 14 and 12 MLAs respectively. The ruling coalition in the state also has the support of an independent MLA. The Congress currently has 22 MLAs while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has 14 MLAs.
