Following severe flooding in Nepal and the possibility of a rise in the water level of the Gandak River, the Bihar government has asked districts along the Gandak, including West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali, to remain on alert. Akashvani correspondent reports that at the Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage in West Champaran, the water level of the river is falling. Around 80,000 cusecs of water was released from the barrage this morning, about half the discharge recorded last night. At present, the situation is under control.
However, as a precautionary measure, the district administration has already shifted more than five thousand people living in low-lying areas to safer locations. The situation remains similar in other vulnerable districts as well. All necessary arrangements have been put in place to deal with any emergency. The Bihar government has appealed to people to remain alert, not to panic, and to avoid rumours.
