Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has sanctioned 300 ad-hoc posts in the Medical Education Department, amid escalating COVID cases. The posts include 100 each in the three government run Medical Colleges, to handle the critical patients.

The Chief Minister also issued directions for expeditious recruitment of medical and technical staff against all vacant and sanctioned posts. The Chief Minister had already accorded approval to fill up 6,000 vacancies at various levels.

The directives came after Dr K.K. Talwar, the State Health Adviser and former PGI Director, said 100 staff members, mainly Senior Resident Doctors and Assistant Professors, were required to be on-board by the Medical Education Department in each Medical College on an urgent basis to handle the critical COVID patients.

Captain Amarinder Singh also accepted the suggestion that one faculty member from Anaesthesia/Critical Care should be on round-the-clock duty to give best possible care to sick patients in ICU. He has also directed the Health and Medical Education Departments to ensure that samples of symptomatic cases are taken on priority and all COVID test reports are submitted within 12 hours.
