GUWAHATI: A total of 10 people, including six women, have died in landslides and lightning in the Northeast. According to an official report, three members of the same family and a two-and-a-half-year-old child were killed in landslides at two different places in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills in the early hours of Thursday. Three members of a family of five people lost their lives in a landslide in Gambegre block area of West Garo Hills. Two others were taken to the hospital in a critical condition.

The second incident took place in Betasing area of South West Garo Hills, in which a two-and-a-half-year-old boy died. The incidents occurred in Garo Hills after heavy rains lashed the city on Wednesday night. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rains in Assam till June 12. According to the official, five houses were destroyed and one person sustained minor injuries due to landslides in Lingshing village, while a portion of the road has been washed away by landslides near Wahumkhrah river in Wahingdoh.In Assam, at least six women working in tea gardens were charred to death due to lightning in Biswanath district amidst heavy rains and thunderstorms in several districts. The charred women work at Majuligarh Tea Estate and Pakhoi Tea Estate. The women have been identified as Charit Orang, Laxmi Kalandi, Mami Bhumij, Gopi Oriya (Pabhoi), Pinki Tasha and Kumli Khadal.
