AASAA demand: Declare Karam Puja govt holiday and ST status to Adivasis

Kokrajhar :  The All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) Kokrajhar district committee today carried out a cultural protest demanding fulfilment of their various demands including scheduled tribe (ST) status to the Adivasis communities of Assam and declaring Karam Puja as government holiday.

Commemorating the celebration of Karam Puja at Joypur in Kokrajhar, over a hundred people, including members of AASAA participated in the programme. A rally was also carried out shouting slogans with placards in hand.

Dilip Murmu, president of Kokrajhar district AASAA criticized the BJP government over nonfulfilment on the demands of the student organisations pertaining to the Adivasis communities of Assam. He said that several times the government had assured to fulfil their demands including declaring Karam Puja as government holiday and granting ST status, but till now the government had not done so..

Murmu also come heavily on the members of Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA) for playing with the sentiments of the Adivasis people for their political gain and protest being identified as Tea tribes instead of their tribes name saying that the Adivasis people should be identified with their tribe names and not as Tea tribes.
