BOSTON: The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named STV and Geonetics as a winner of their 2020 Bronze Engineering Excellence Award for their joint work on the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) Plan for Accessible Transit Infrastructure (PATI) report for proposed improvements.
The 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards were recently announced and will be celebrated at the 2021 ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala. The awards celebrate innovation, ingenuity, and excellence in engineering achievement.
As part of an ongoing effort to provide barrier-free access to bus and rail passengers, the MBTA selected STV and Geonetics to develop a comprehensive Plan for Accessible Transit Infrastructure (PATI), to increase accessibility for disabled passengers. Geonetics created an intuitive software program that was used across the city’s intricate bus and rail systems. STV then used the data gathered to build a framework that prioritized the upgrades in the MBTA’s 20-year improvement plan. The (PATI) report included proposed improvements – from removing barriers to adding ADA-compliant support and refurbishing existing stations. The findings detailed in the PATI report, completed under budget, will facilitate accessibility upgrades that address transportation barriers faced by Boston’s disabled passengers.
Founded more than 100 years ago, STV is a leader in providing architectural, engineering, planning, environmental, and construction management services for transportation systems, infrastructure, buildings, energy, and other facilities. The firm has Massachusetts offices in Boston and Newton. Geonetics is a 20-year-old boutique custom software development firm based in Boston, MA. Core competencies include enterprise software, GIS integration, and legacy system and data integration.
“The Engineering Excellence Awards program recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate a high degree of achievement, value and ingenuity,” said Jenn Howe, President of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts and Principal and Vice President at SMMA, Symmes Maini & McKee Associates. “Entrants are rated by an independent panel of judges from the architectural community, the construction industry, academia, the media, and the public sector on the basis of uniqueness and originality; future value to the profession and perception by the public; social, economic and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of the client/owner’s need, including schedule and budget. We congratulate them and thank them for their contributions to improving the quality of our everyday lives.”
