Cannes, French Riviera – The Cannes Film Festival red carpet has been inseparable from the presence of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan; a figure who has continually redefined what an Indian fashion moment can look like on the global stage. This year, that legacy enters a new chapter as Amit Aggarwal creates a custom couture look for her appearance at the 79th Cannes Film Festival.
Over the last two decades, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s appearances at Cannes have come to represent a distinct space within global red-carpet fashion – one rooted in reinvention, individuality, and theatricality. For this year’s appearance, Amit Aggarwal designed Luminara, a couture creation centred around the idea of light in motion. The piece explores light not simply as illumination, but as energy, movement, and force; translated through sculptural construction and engineered craftsmanship.
At the core of the garment is Amit Aggarwal’s signature Crystal Vein embroidery technique, developed over more than 1500 hours of meticulous handwork. Thousands of crystalline linear embellishments have been individually placed across the gown, held together through an intricate lattice-like structure that binds the crystal veins seamlessly across the body to create the effect of illuminated pathways moving across the body. Designed to interact dynamically with movement and light, the embroidery continuously refracts and transforms as the wearer moves, giving the garment an almost kinetic quality.
The silhouette draws from biomimicry, a key inspiration for Amit Aggarwal’s work. Structured wing-like extensions emerging from the shoulders evoke movement and propulsion, while contouring the body with architectural sharpness. Rendered in an abyss blue, the couture piece references cosmic depth and the infinite nature of light travelling through space. Every surface of the garment has been constructed to respond to illumination, allowing the piece to visually evolve under different lighting conditions.
For Amit Aggarwal, the collaboration with stylist Mohit Rai and Aishwarya represents a convergence of cinematic presence and couture innovation.
“Aishwarya has always approached Cannes with a strong sense of individuality and evolution. With Luminara, Mohit and I wanted to create something that felt less like a garment and more like an energy field around her. The piece explores the idea of light as strength, movement, and transformation; while honouring the extraordinary radiance she has carried through decades on the global stage” says Amit Aggarwal.
The collaboration further reinforces Amit Aggarwal’s position as one of the leading voices in contemporary Indian couture, recognised for combining material innovation, sculptural techniques, and traditional craftsmanship to create garments that exist at the intersection of fashion, art, and science.
