Guwahati : The Government of Assam was not doing enough to ensure that names of illegal migrants from Bangladesh are not included in the NRC- alleged the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 30 organisations representing various ethnic communities on Friday. It should be noted that, December 15 is the last date for filing NRC-related claims and objections. The organisations further alleged that the government did not utilize Section 4.3 of the Citizenship Act that empowers the NRC officials to conduct suo moto investigation for verifying the nationality of the applicants. AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya on Friday said that ethnic and student bodies were ready to help people in filing their objections against doubtful nationals so that an error-free NRC is prepared. “So far, we have not demanded a deadline extension. Even if the government machinery comes into action now and assist the local people in filing objections, it will make a lot of difference,” he added. During the ensuing winter session of Parliament, AASU and 30 organisations would stage a protest programme in New Delhi on December 21.
