Army truck plunges into 600 feet ditch, four jawans killed and six seriously injured

GUWAHATI : A major accident took place in East Sikkim. A truck carrying army personnel fell into a ditch. Four jawans were killed and six other jawans were seriously injured. This information was given by the police. An official said the accident took place on New Jawaharlal Nehru Road. He said the route connects Gangtok with Somgo Lake and Nathula near indo-China border. The official said fifteen kumaon regiment jawans were on board the truck and were on their way to Gangtok when the driver lost control of the vehicle and fell into a 600 feet deep gorge.

 The driver and three other jawans died on the spot. The official said army, BRO, police and locals carried out rescue operations amidst bad weather in the difficult area and admitted three injured soldiers to Army Hospital in Gangtok from where they have been sent for treatment at Siliguri in West Bengal. The incident took place near Naku La in Sikkim sector bordering India-China border. Army sources said, a major road accident has taken place in Sikkim due to border dispute. An Army official said, the incident took place on New Jawaharlal Nehru Road connecting Somgo Lake and Nathula in Gangtok near the Indo-China border. Sikkim and Somgo Lake and Nathula are strategically important for India. Tensions between India and China continued for months over the construction of a road in Doklam in 2017.
