Aster Medcity Kochi Reports Kerala’s First Successful Carotid Stenting through hand via Radial artery
Kochi: Aster Medcity, Kochi performs the first successful radial artery stenting for the carotid artery in Kerala. A small nick is made in the righthand in the radial artery, and a carotid artery stent is placed in the neck. This approach reduces the complications of bleeding, hematoma and pain.
Being a minimal access procedure, these procedures are safer and interventional neurologists can ensure lesser complications compared to conventional femoral artery approach. The patient experiences less pain, complications, blood loss and scarring compared to femoral approach which in turn translates to faster recovery. The surgery is usually done for people having a blockage in the carotid artery, the artery that goes through the neck from the heart to the brain. The condition greatly increases the risk of stroke. The common procedures for this include carotid artery stenting, carotid endarterectomy (whereby the arteries are surgically opened and cleaned).
