Beyond the smartphone: Aina unveils an AI ring that anticipates what you need before you ask

Bengaluru: What if technology could anticipate the little things before they became another task on your list? Your usual cab ready when it’s time to leave, a meeting running late taken care of, or the right action surfaced exactly when you need it. And what if interacting with your devices, managing meetings, and getting things done with AI agents took nothing more than a simple gesture?

This is the future of computing that consumer hardware startup Aina is building toward. After 15 months in stealth, the company has unveiled an AI-powered ring with a display that understands context, learns your routines, and anticipates what you need next, bringing relevant actions and controls directly to your fingertips.

Founded by Apoorv Shankar, former VP of Hardware at Ultrahuman, Aina is building a new interface for the age of AI. While AI is becoming capable of understanding context and taking action on our behalf, the way we interact with technology has barely changed. We’re still navigating apps, switching between screens, and manually initiating tasks. Aina is designed to bridge that gap by making interactions with technology more intuitive and responsive to what people need in the moment.

Even simple everyday actions, like booking a cab, joining a meeting, controlling devices, or approving an AI agent’s action, still involve multiple steps. Aina aims to change this by reducing the need to constantly reach for a phone, open apps, or manually initiate every interaction. Instead, it brings relevant actions directly to the user, based on what they’re doing and what they might need next.

At the heart of Aina is its proprietary Agentic/Context-Aware Operating System, which learns from user patterns and uses contextual information from their phone, Mac, and connected AI agents to anticipate what might be needed next. It surfaces three relevant actions or suggestions, called Cues, on the ring’s display, allowing users to act on them with a simple flick of their thumb.

Aina brings together three core capabilities:

1. Aina Voice: Talk to your AI agents

Aina Voice offers a faster, more direct way to interact with AI agents. Users can connect their existing agents through the Aina app and communicate with them using Shifter, a custom mechanical interface designed like a planar joystick and integrated into the ring’s band that detects thumb gestures in four directions.

Users can press and hold Shifter to speak to their agents. When an agent needs input or approval to proceed, a notification appears on the display. Users can flick their thumb upward to approve an action or press and hold Shifter to respond by voice.

Aina also has a built-in speaker for conversations with AI agents and phone calls. Users can initiate calls through voice commands and bring their hand to their ear to speak and listen.

Users can connect their existing AI agents through the Aina app and interact with them by pressing and holding the ring’s centre button. When an agent requires an input or approval, a notification appears on the ring’s display. Users can approve or reject suggestions with a flick or respond through voice. The built-in speaker also enables conversations with AI agents and phone calls, with users able to bring the ring to their ear to speak and listen.

2. Aina Cues: Technology that predicts what you need next

Aina Cues takes a proactive approach to everyday tasks by understanding users’ routines and anticipating what they might need next. It uses context from their phone, Mac, and connected AI agents, including app usage patterns, location, and calendar details, to identify relevant actions and make them available at the right moment.

For instance, if someone typically leaves for work at 9 AM, Aina can have a shortcut to book their usual Uber ready just before they leave. If they’re running late for a meeting, it can suggest sending an email to inform others. These shortcuts, called Cues, appear on the ring’s display, allowing users to act on them with a simple flick of their thumb.

As AI agents become more proactive, Aina Cues is designed to make their capabilities accessible through timely suggestions that fit naturally into users’ daily routines.

3. Aina Remote: Controls that adapt to what you’re doing

Aina also transforms into a contextual remote control, offering a context-aware way to control devices and applications, with the ring’s interface changing based on the user’s current activity.

While listening to music, it functions as a music remote, allowing users to control playback. During a video meeting, it surfaces controls for the microphone, camera, and AI notetaker. When watching television, it can function as a TV remote.

Instead of a fixed set of controls, Aina Remote presents the functions relevant to each activity, allowing users to manage different devices and tasks through the same interface.

Apoorv Shankar, Founder, Aina, said, “Every major shift in computing has come from software and hardware built together. The mouse and the GUI brought personal computing. The touchscreen and the App Store brought mobile computing. Now, with Aina and AI agents, we enter a new era: personalized computing, right at your fingertips.”

He added, “We started building Aina with the belief that AI would evolve from following instructions to anticipating what we need. With proactive agents, that shift has already begun. Agents like Muse, Instinct and Dots will soon run hundreds of our daily tasks. Today we instruct them by text or voice. Next, they’ll learn our patterns, build on our context and turn proactive for almost every interaction, waiting only for our approval. Hundreds of times a day, we’ll choose between options and say yes or no. Pulling out and unlocking a phone for each of these binary moments won’t work. Hardware interfaces beyond the phone will be built for voice and quick approvals, and Aina is designed for that future.”

From an HCI research lab to a new consumer technology category

Aina’s journey began in May 2025 as a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) lab, with a focus on exploring how people would interact with technology in the age of AI.

Over the next 15 months, the team experimented with different physical interfaces, exploring how context-aware computing could simplify everyday interactions. At CES 2026, Aina showcased three experimental AI interface concepts. This was followed by Dune in April 2026, a context-aware three-key keypad for Mac that changes its controls based on the application in use. Dune shipped to hundreds of early adopters, giving the team valuable insights into how people interact with adaptive physical controls in real-world settings.

These experiments laid the groundwork for Aina, bringing together the team’s learnings in hardware design, contextual computing, and everyday user behavior. Since early October, the company has been running a private pilot with a small group of users, using their feedback to refine the hardware and interaction experience ahead of the public unveiling.

Aina announced a $5.5 million seed funding round in July 2026. Today, its 40-member team operates across San Francisco and Bengaluru, bringing together expertise in consumer hardware, industrial design, engineering, and manufacturing.
