Chennai: In a stern message to his ministerial team, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday warned Cabinet colleagues and senior officials against any form of corruption or administrative irregularities, signalling a decisive push for clean governance in the fledgling administration.

Chairing a high-level Cabinet meeting at the Secretariat, the Chief Minister made it unequivocally clear that his government would maintain an uncompromising stance on probity in public life. Sources privy to the meeting revealed that Vijay told ministers and top bureaucrats that he would not hesitate to initiate stringent action against anyone found indulging in corrupt practices or deviating from established norms.

“No one should later say they were not warned. I will not tolerate corruption or irregularities in any department,” the CM is understood to have asserted, according to sources. He emphasised that accountability would be non-negotiable and that swift disciplinary measures, including removal from office where warranted, would follow any proven misconduct.

The warning comes at a critical juncture as Vijay’s government, riding high on its electoral success with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), settles into governance. Having promised a break from dynastic politics and “business as usual” in his campaign, the actor-turned-politician is visibly keen on translating rhetoric into action. Insiders say the CM reviewed departmental performance reports during the meeting and expressed concern over potential red flags in key sectors such as public works, revenue, and procurement.

Vijay reportedly directed officials to strengthen internal vigilance mechanisms and ensure all tenders and major decisions undergo rigorous scrutiny. He also stressed the importance of transparency in citizen-centric services, urging ministers to lead by example and foster a culture of ethical governance. “The people of Tamil Nadu have placed their faith in us. We cannot betray that trust,” a source quoted the Chief Minister as saying.

This strong directive aligns with Vijay’s broader administrative philosophy of frugal leadership and crackdown on systemic issues. In recent weeks, the government has initiated reviews of ongoing projects and is said to be preparing guidelines for stricter enforcement of anti-corruption laws. Senior officials present at the meeting welcomed the CM’s firm approach, with some describing it as a much-needed reset in a state long plagued by allegations of political patronage and irregularities.

Political observers view the move as both a preventive measure and a public signal of intent. With opposition parties closely watching the new regime’s early days, Vijay’s zero-tolerance policy could help consolidate his image as a decisive leader focused on delivery over drama. However, implementation will be key, as critics often point out the gap between announcements and ground-level outcomes in Indian politics.

The Cabinet meeting also touched upon other governance priorities, including streamlining welfare schemes and addressing immediate administrative bottlenecks. As Tamil Nadu navigates challenges ranging from economic pressures to law and order, the CM’s emphasis on integrity is expected to set the tone for the coming months.

Vijay’s administration has already made headlines for suspending select officials and initiating performance audits. Sources indicate that further institutional reforms, including strengthening the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, are on the anvil.
