CM visits erosion and flood affected areas of Chirang district

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Tuesday said the State Government would take prompt steps for finding lasting solution to flood and erosion caused by river Aie in Lower Assam.

Sonowal today visited the erosion hit areas of Tulsijhara village  near Hagrama bridge in Chirang district and assessed the devastations caused by river Aie which flows from upstream Bhutan. 

Heavy rains in the foothills of the Himalayan kingdom always  sparked fears of fresh flooding in the lower Assam districts of Barpeta, Baksa, Nalbari, Chirang, Udalguri and Bongaigaon, every year.

He also visited flood relief camps at No. 341 Majharabari LP School and No. 128 Nowapara LP School and took stock of the government services being provided at the centres and interacted with the inmates.

Later interacting with media persons, the Chief Minister said he has made personal visits to various flood affected districts to have a first hand understanding about the damages caused by flood and the quality of services rendered by the local administration to the flood hit people.

Stating that the flood waters of river Aie have destroyed huge tract of agricultural land and affected large numbers of people in both Chirang and Bongaigaon district, the chief minsiter said the State Government would take prompt steps for finding lasting solution to flood and erosion caused by river Aie.

“The Central Government would take up the matter with the Bhutan Government for bringing out an early solution, he said referring to a question regarding water flowing down from Bhutan causing flood in Assam.

The Chief Minister also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Union Government has made sincere efforts to find a permanent solution to the flood and erosion problem of Assam.

He said that the local administrations are taking expeditious measures for helping out them and people have also extended full cooperation.

Earlier, Chief Minister Sonowal took stock of the COVID-19 and flood situation in Chirang, Bongaigaon and Goalpara districts last night in a meeting held at Bongaingaon Refinery guest house, Dhaligaon with senior district officials.

Water Resources Minister Keshav Mahanta, Tourism Minister Chandan Brahma and Bijni MLA Kamalsing Narzary accompanied the Chief Minister during his visit to Chirang.

Meanwhile flood situation continue to be grim in many parts of lower Assam districts.  In Chirang district, due to incessant and continuous rainfall in the catchment areas of neighbouring Bhutan and in Assam the water- levels of river Aie, Lankar, Bhur and Champa flowing through the district are witnessed rising ang caused  damages of  properties of the people and the government.
