CM visits family of minors found hanging from tree in Kokrajhar, 5 arrested

Kokrajhar: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday visited the residence of two minor girls who were found hanging from a tree under mysterious circumstances at Abhiyakuthi village in Kokrajhar district.

The chief minister along with Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief executive member Pramod Boro, Kokrajhar East MLA Lawrence Islary visited the family and took stock of the situation.

Talking to Reporters after meeting the family of the deceases, the chief minister said the whole incident indicates of conspiracy. He stated that prima facie suggest that the girls were either murdered or were force to commit suicide under duress. He said the government has not taken death of two innocent girls lightly. He said the BTR IGP and SP Kokrajhar has been asked for investigation into the whole incident, if it’s a murder, punishment of the murderer and if its suicide than the reason behind the suicide.

The chief minister also said four-five persons were detains for interrogation. He informed that two of those detains use to talk with the girls and have deleted their mobile messages. The whole matter points towards conspiracy and everything will be out after investigation, he said.

Bodies of two minor girls, Rubita Rabha, 15 years and Somaina Rabha, 14 years were found hanging from a tree in a nearby forest area atop a hill on Friday evening. The two girls are aunt and niece in relation. Rubita is Somaina’s elder brother’s daughter.

According to police, the bodies of the two girls were found hanging from a branch of a tree in a nearby forest area 1km from their house.

Family members said the entire family had gone to the paddy field for harvest and returned around 4 pm but did not find the two girls in the house. When they did not return they started searching in the area and later some villagers found their bodies hanging from a tree in a nearby forest area atop a hill.

Meanwhile Kokrajhar Police have arrested five persons in this connection.

Briefing Reporters today, Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Prateek Thube said in connection with Kokrajhar Police station case no 440/2021, five prime suspects were arrested and interrogation is on.

The arrested persons were identified as Hanif Ali, Jahanur Islam, Sankardev Barman, Mohd Atab Ali and Muzammel Seikh- between 20 to 27 years age. 

Thube said the police are looking at all possibilities behind the death of the two girls. He post-mortem report is expected to be out in a day or two.
