Collegium Recommends Appointment Of Chief Justices Of 5 High Courts

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended names for the appointment of Chief Justices to five High Courts of the country. The Collegium, when it appoints Judges of High Courts, comprises the Chief Justice of India and the two senior most puisne judges. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai constituted the Collegium.

Justice Arun Bhansai

Justice Arun Bhansali, judge, Rajasthan High Court has been recommended for appointment as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court.

The Collegium stated about Justice Arun Bhansali: Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Mr Justice Arun Bhansali is fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. While recommending his name, the Collegium is conscious of the fact that the Rajasthan High Court will be represented by two Chief Justices among the Chief Justices of the High Courts, as the Collegium has vide a separate resolution also recommended the appointment of Mr Justice Vijay Bishnoi, who is senior to Mr Justice Arun Bhansali, as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

Justice Vijay Bishnoi

Justice Vijay Bishnoi, judge, Rajasthan High Court, has been recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

The Collegium said, “As regards his contribution to the judiciary by way of disposal of cases, during his tenure of nearly eleven years as a Judge of High Court, he has authored 652 reported judgments. He has acquired extensive experience in dispensing justice in the Rajasthan High Court. He has maintained a high order of professional ethics at the Bar and the Bench and. His conduct and integrity are beyond reproach. While recommending his name, the Collegium has taken into consideration the fact that at present the Rajasthan High Court which is parent High Court of Mr Justice Bishnoi is not represented among the Chief Justices of the High Courts.”

Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava

Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava has been recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court.

The Collegium stated that, “As regards his contribution to the judiciary by way of disposal of cases, during his tenure of over 14 years as a Judge of High Court, he has authored more than 505 reported judgments. He has acquired considerable experience of dispensing justice in two High Courts. While considering his name, the Collegium has also taken into consideration the fact that the High Court of Chhattisgarh which is his parent High Court does not have any representation among the Chief Justices of the High Courts.”

Dr Justice BR Sarangi

Dr Justice BR Sarangi, judge, Orissa High Court, has been recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

The Collegium stated, “As regards his contribution to the judiciary by way of disposal of cases, during his tenure of more than 10 years as a Judge of High Court, he has authored more than 1056 reported judgments. He has acquired considerable experience in dispensing justice in the High Court. While considering his name, the Collegium has taken into consideration the fact that after the retirement of Mr Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra, there would be no representation of the High Court of Orissa among the Chief Justices of the High Courts.”

Justice Sheel Nagu

Justice Sheel Nagu, judge, Madhya Pradesh High Court, has been recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana.

The Collegium stated, “As regards his contribution to the judiciary by way of disposal of cases, during his tenure of over 12 years as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, he has authored more than 499 reported judgments. He has acquired extensive experience in dispensing justice at the High Court. He is the seniormost puisne Judge in his parent High Court. He is considered to be a competent judge and possesses a high level of integrity and conduct required of a person holding high judicial office. While recommending his name, the Collegium is conscious of the fact that the High Court of Madhya Pradesh is already represented by a Chief Justice among the Chief Justices of the High Courts.”
