New Delhi: Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang on Saturday met the Commission on Glacial Hazards, Sikkim, led by its Chairperson, Dr Akhilesh Gupta, who submitted the Commission’s report to the Chief Minister. Minister Mr Pintso Namgyal Lepcha was also present during the meeting.
The Government of Sikkim had constituted the Commission on September 11, 2024, in the aftermath of the devastating South Lhonak Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) of 2023. The Commission was tasked with preparing a comprehensive strategy and roadmap for the mitigation of glacial hazards in the State.
The report has put forward eight major recommendations aimed at strengthening Sikkim’s preparedness, resilience and response mechanisms against glacial hazards. The recommendations also envision positioning Sikkim as a model Himalayan State and setting an example for effective glacial hazard mitigation across the country.
Congratulating Dr Akhilesh Gupta and all the members of the Commission, the Chief Minister lauded their dedicated efforts, valuable expertise and commitment towards ensuring the safety and security of the people of Sikkim.
The Chief Minister stated that the Government of Sikkim would take the Commission’s recommendations forward with determination and a spirit of collective responsibility. He emphasised the need for continued efforts towards building a safer, more resilient and climate-conscious Sikkim.
The Chief Minister further expressed confidence that the initiatives emerging from the Commission’s recommendations would help establish Sikkim as an example for glacial hazard mitigation across the Himalayan region. He thanked the Commission for its valuable contribution and extended his best wishes to its members for their future endeavours.
