In Tamil Nadu, the Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID)Police has booked four policemen on charges of murder for the killing of the father-son duo from Sattankulam. The CB-CID Inspector General Shankar told reporters at Thoothukudi last night that the two FIRs filed earlier by the local police have been converted into murder charges against the two Sub-Inspectors and two policemen. He said, one Sub-Inspector has been arrested and remanded. He added that more people may also come under the investigation based on getting further leads.
The investigation is being monitored by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
Meanwhile, the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation by the State Government. The court asked the CB-CID Deputy Superintendent of Police-in-Charge Anil Kumar to immediately begin investigating the case as the delay due to the procedures in the CBI taking up the case may help eradication of evidence.
The High Court observed that there is a prima facie evidence to book a case of murder. The CB-CID deployed about a dozen teams of officials to investigate the brutal killing that shook the conscience of the whole nation.
The trader Jayaraj and his son Benick were taken to the Sattankulam Police Station for alleged violation of lockdown. The duo was reportedly tortured and later remanded. The two later died. The local doctor who certified the two as fit and the Magistrate who ordered them to be remanded are also being inquired.
