Cyclonic Storm ‘Burevi’ over southwest Bay of Bengal : Alert for Tamilnadu and Kerala
Chennai: The Deep Depression over the southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening. As per the naming convention, it is named as ‘Burevi’ (बुरेवि), and the name has been contributed by the Maldives. The MET Department has said in its latest weather bulletin, the system currently lays centred at about 400 km east-southeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. It is set to cross the Sri Lankan coast near Trincomalee by tomorrow evening or night and move nearly westwards thereafter. It is expected to emerge into the Gulf of Mannar and its adjoining Comorin area on the 3rd morning. It is set to cross the shores between Pamban and Kanyakumari in southern Tamil Nadu early in the morning on Friday.
In TamilNadu, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai districts are expected to get heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely very heavy rainfall at isolated places from 2nd to 3rd December. Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea during this period.
In kerala, arrangements are on war footing as Met Department predicts heavy rain, strong winds and cyclone in the State for coming days.Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that all the departments are instructed to coordinate and facilitate the relief activities in southern districts from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam. Arrangements are being done to shift the people living in vulnerable settlements.Relief and rescue operations in coasted regions are being arranged in coordination with Navy and coastal guards.State had requested for more NDRF teams.
Extremely heavy rain is expected on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in south Kerala. A red is sounded in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta and orange is issued in Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki on Thursday
Fishing is completely banned in Kerala coast for coming days till further orders.
It is yet to be ascertained how the cyclone will affect Kerala. Gusty wind and very heavy rain are likely in south Kerala. The Chief Minister said that precautions have been taken for any adverse situation. In case of extremely heavy rains, smaller dams may be opened.
