New Delhi : Several Resident Welfare Associations (RWA’s)  and senior citizens in the national capital have written to Delhi Chief Minister Ms Rekha Gupta raising a serious alarm over mixing of sewage water with the drain water across the city.

“The mixing of sewage with drain water, especially storm drains, is a serious issue with significant environmental and health consequences. This usually occurs due to faulty infrastructure, illegal connections, or improper disposal of waste into drainage systems. The contamination can lead to waterborne diseases, ecological damage, and the formation of harmful disinfection byproducts” said Mr K K Kapila, a senior citizen and former co-chair  of FICCI infrastructure committee.

“Mixing of Sewage with drain water has health risks  as it contains harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can contaminate drinking water sources, leading to various diseases. These include Waterborne diseases like gastroenteritis, cholera, and typhoid can spread due to contaminated water. It also causes environmental damage as sewage discharge pollutes rivers, lakes, and other water bodies, harming aquatic life and ecosystems.” He said,

“This also leads to infrastructure issues including illegal connections, and inadequate waste management practices contribute to the problem. It emits a very foul smell and is a source of various diseases. Ensuring proper maintenance and upgrades of drainage systems and sewage treatment plants is crucial.” Said Mrs Ritu Bhatia Secretary, Mahila Pragatisheel Association

RWA’s have requested Delhi CM to direct the concerned Department to take immediate measures to stop connecting sewers with drains. Sewerage lines must be connected to sewer lines and this sewage water must be treated before ultimately discharging it in the river.

Other suggestions include Sewage contains organic matter that can react with disinfectants in drinking water treatment, creating potentially harmful byproducts.
