Guwahati : Assamese feature film Dipholu saw a notable turnaround over its opening weekend, with multiple theatres across Assam reporting houseful shows on Sunday. As word-of-mouth gained momentum, the film saw an encouraging rise in audience turnout, giving it a positive start to its theatrical journey.

The growing response across Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Bihpuria, Biswanath Chariali, Moran, Mangaldoi, Tezpur and Nagaon reflects the film’s ability to connect with audiences through its simple, rooted storytelling, nostalgic music, humour and an ensemble cast spanning generations. Audience feedback over the weekend has highlighted how Dipholu brings together the familiar rhythms of village life and the emotional connections that continue to shape Assamese society.

In Mangaldoi, viewers appreciated the film for revisiting the beauty and complexity of rural life at a time when many people have moved to cities and grown distant from their roots. “People have moved to cities and, somewhere along the way, forgotten the beauty of village life and the strength of community. Dipholu brings that world back to us, with all its struggles, relationships and everyday realities. The music adds to the experience, and the film carries an important message that everyone should come and discover for themselves,” said a viewer from Mangaldoi.

The film also drew audiences beyond their immediate neighbourhoods. A few film lovers from Kaliabor travelled to Tezpur on Sunday to watch Dipholu and came away pleased with the experience. “We travelled from Kaliabor to Tezpur to watch Dipholu, and we were not disappointed. It is a beautiful, uncomplicated story that stays true to village life, and every actor has done a fabulous job. The film reminds us that a compelling story does not need to be complicated to touch the audience,” said one of the viewers.

Other moviegoers in Tezpur drew attention to the film’s musical appeal, particularly the voices of Zubeen Garg and Gayatri Hazarika. “The voices of Zubeen Garg and Gayatri Hazarika give the film a special kind of magic. There is something dreamy and nostalgic about the music that takes you deeper into the world of the story. It is an experience that deserves to be enjoyed on the big screen,” remarked a viewer in Tezpur.

In Nagaon, audiences singled out the film’s comic moments, describing the humour as well-timed and particularly enjoyable. “The comic moments are right on point. The combination of artistes like Rajib Dowari and Nagaon’s very own Jyotishman Bora with experienced actors such as Arun Hazarika and Purnada Hazarika makes the humour especially enjoyable. The performances complement one another and make the film entertaining without losing its connection to everyday life,” said a moviegoer from Nagaon.

Beyond its humour, music and emotional storytelling, Dipholu is also being appreciated as a complete family entertainer. With four generations of actors coming together in the film, it offers an opportunity for families to watch a story that can be enjoyed across age groups, without uncomfortable moments, while reconnecting with shared cultural experiences and values.

For director Nekib, the growing response has been an encouraging development after the team’s long journey towards bringing the film to theatres. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has come to the theatres to watch Dipholu and supported us through their words and encouragement. It is especially heartening to hear people talk about the story, the music, the humour and the memories the film brings back. I invite everyone who has not watched it yet to come to the theatres, experience Dipholu and share their honest feedback with us,” said Nekib.

Produced by Jekiv under the banner of Borluit Productions, Dipholu is rooted in Assamese village life and explores human relationships, aspirations and the cultural landscape of Assam. Blending humour, emotion and social themes, the film finds beauty in ordinary experiences and celebrates the people, communities and memories that connect audiences to their roots.

With Sunday’s encouraging turnout and positive audience feedback across several towns, Dipholu is looking to build on its opening-weekend momentum. The team hopes that continued word of mouth will bring more audiences to theatres across Assam in the coming days, allowing the film’s simple, deeply Assamese story to find an even wider audience.
