GUWAHATI : A joint team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police on Wednesday seized about 72 kg of brown sugar from Camu in Thobal district of Manipur. This is one of the largest consignments of brown sugar seized in Manipur in recent times. Azam Rifles official said here today that in a painstaking search operation conducted in difficult terrain in the dark hours, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police seized about 72 kg of brown sugar from Kamu in Thobal district of Manipur on Wednesday. The market price of brown sugar is estimated at Rs. 287 crores. In particular, it is one of the largest consignments of brown sugar seized in Manipur in recent times.
Taking action on an intelligence input, a joint team of Assam Police and Manipur Police raided the hub’s drug distribution on Wednesday. From prima facial testing, it has made headlines that a consignment of brown sugar was smuggled from Myanmar taking advantage of the Jharjhara international border. Many international drug trafficking networks are active in Manipur, and are engaged in transferring consignments to various states in India. Assam Rifles and Manipur Police in close coordination with Customs (Preventive) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) teams in Manipur to check drug and other drug trafficking along myanmar border in Manipur. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) team has disclosed that large scale drugs, brown sugar are being smuggled into the Indian territory through Myanmar. For this, the international border of Jharjhar, the international border of Bengal is being availed by the smugglers.
After getting the information, the central security agencies deployed on the border of Bengal, Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh have been asked to intensify vigil while remaining vigilant.
