0 4

Most people feel full after eating a large meal. But sometimes some people might end up feeling satisfied after only a few bites. Medically it is known as early satiety. If this is something that is becoming a pattern it is not something that can or should be ignored. It might be indicative of some underlying gastrointestinal disorder that requires medical attention as soon as possible.

What is early satiety?

It means that patients cannot eat a full portion of meal. A sensation of fullness develops unusually and very quickly. People might feel like only consuming a small portion of food can be consumed. After which they might be feeling uncomfortable and bloated. Over time, this can lead to inadequate nutrition, negative weight loss and even fatigue.

Common Symptoms that may accompany early satiety are

Early satiety is associated with other digestive symptoms like:

●           feeling persistent bloating after meals

●           nausea + vomiting

●           there may be some upper abdominal discomfort

●           acid reflux and feeling heartburn

●           Losing of Appetite

●           An unexplained loss of weight

What causes early satiety

There are several gastrointestinal conditions which may contribute to this problem.

Gastroparesis is a condition in which the stomach empties the eaten food more slowly than normal. This is one of the most common causes. It is usually in people who have diabetes, but it can also occur after a viral infection or certain abdominal surgeries.

A peptic ulcer can create inflammation and swelling because of which the stomach or upper intestine can make it very difficult for food to normally pass.

There are some other more concerning causes which can cause this. It includes stomach tumors, gastric outlet obstruction and even cancers which affect the stomach, pancreas and surrounding organs.

How is it diagnosed?

It will typically begin with a detailed medical history. After all this physical examination will be conducted like:

●           an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy

●           ultrasound / CT scan for abdomen

●           gastric emptying studies for stomach motility

●           blood tests to check for anemia / infection / nutritional deficiencies

●           tests for Helicobacter pylori infection

Treatment options

It depends mainly on the underlying cause.

If it is a case like gastroparesis then some dietary modifications may be made to resolve it. It may be recommended to eat smaller but more frequent meals. Medications can also be given.

If ulcers, gastritis or infections are identified, then the treatment may include acid suppressing medications and antibiotics.

 When a surgery is needed?

Many cases will positively respond to medication and dietary management. But some patients will need medical intervention like surgeries or some other advanced interventions.

Patients who have to recover from gastric outlet obstruction may need some specific procedures that can be done to widen the blocked area. If it is an extreme case of severe gastroparesis then something like gastric electrical stimulation or minimally invasive surgeries may be considered.

If it is a tumor / cancer, then the treatment might involve a partial / total gastrectomy (removal of part or all the stomach). Advanced endoscopic procedures can also remove certain early-stage lesions without major surgery.

It is important to consult a medical professional for any consultation, diagnosis and appropriate treatment options.
