Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) has been designed to help bridge the gap between industry expectations and the skills of candidates who apply for jobs under the scheme.
Interacting with the interns in New Delhi, Mrs Sitharaman said the scheme has been designed after interactions with industry people as well as graduates and those who completed ITI courses. Under the PMIS, implemented by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, those in the 18-25 age group are eligible to join and the interns receive a minimum financial assistance of 9,000 rupees per month. The third round of the pilot phase of the scheme is underway.
The Minister said the scheme is helping bridge this gap by providing young people with hands-on industry experience.
She said the scheme also enables the youth to pursue internship opportunities in areas of interest and the candidates will be able to get additional skills beyond their qualifications.
