Bengaluru : Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, marked World Spine Day with ‘Back the Backbone’, an initiative to raise awareness about spine health among Karnataka State Police personnel while recognising their service and commitment to public safety. The programme brought together approximately 150 participants, including police personnel, hospital leadership, doctors, and staff.

Led by Dr. Umesh Srikantha, Additional Director – Neurosurgery & Clinical Lead – Spine Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, the initiative featured an expert talk on spine health, an interactive awareness session for police personnel and the unveiling of ‘Tips & Tricks for a Healthy Spine’, an FAQ book offering practical guidance on maintaining spinal health. Senior doctors and hospital leaders addressed the participants, and key police officers were felicitated in recognition of their service.

Police personnel often work long hours, spend extended periods standing and undertake physically demanding duties that can place considerable strain on their backs and spines. These occupational demands may increase the risk of back pain and other musculoskeletal problems. Studies on occupational health in India have reported a prevalence of lower back pain of up to 45% among police and security personnel. Against this backdrop, Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta’s ‘Back the Backbone’ initiative aims to raise awareness about spine health, encourage early recognition of symptoms and promote preventive practices and timely medical consultation.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Umesh Srikantha, Additional Director – Neurosurgery & Clinical Lead – Spine Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, said, “Spine health is particularly important for people whose workplaces sustained physical demands on their bodies. Police personnel often spend long hours on their feet and undertake physically demanding duties, which can put considerable strain on the spine. Regular physical activity, exercises to strengthen the core muscles and maintaining appropriate posture can help support spine health. It is equally important not to ignore persistent or recurring back pain. Seeking medical advice early can help identify underlying problems and ensure timely treatment before symptoms begin to affect mobility and daily activities. Through ‘Back the Backbone’, we wanted to bring this message to the forefront while acknowledging the service of our police personnel.”

Mr. Gautham CB, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, said, “Through ‘Back the Backbone’, we sought to recognise the Karnataka State Police for their contribution to public safety while bringing greater attention to their health and well-being. We believe healthcare awareness should extend beyond hospital settings and reach communities whose demanding responsibilities can make it difficult to prioritise their own health. We hope this initiative encourages police personnel to take a proactive approach to spine health and preventive care.”
