GUWAHATI : In Assam’s Barpeta district, the parents have got their son back after 3 years. A district court after a DNA test matched the child’s real parents. The baby was separated from the mother immediately after birth. Two pregnant women named Najma Khanam were admitted together at the government hospital. Both had the same name due to which the nurse made a mistake. In 2019, two pregnant women named Najma Khan were admitted to the hospital at the government hospital in the district. The child of one of them was born dead, but the nurse accidentally gave the living baby to another woman. After which the child’s real parents contacted the police.

The district court settled the matter after a DNA test and on Friday ordered the handing over of the three-year-old to his real mother Najma Khanam.Najma had given birth to a baby boy on March 3, 2019 at Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College here. After the delivery, she was kept in the ICU and the newborn was kept in the baby room.

The next day, the hospital administration informed Khanam’s husband that their son had died. Unwilling to admit that their son was healthy at birth, the couple had filed a case against the hospital at Barpeta Sadar police station. During police investigation, it was found that one Najma Khatun of Gosaigaon had admitted her newborn in the same hospital in very critical condition the same day and died the same day. The nurse on duty mixed up the two infants and handed over the dead child to Najma Khanam’s husband. The newborn’s real parents were determined, as per the court order, through DNA testing, which led to her reuniting with the real family.
