Gujarat HC Takes Suo-Moto Cognizance in Extortion Case by Police Officers

Gandhi Nagar: A suo moto cognizance has been taken by the Gujarat High Court recently in a case where two traffic police men and one Traffic Brigade( TRB) jawan had extorted money from a couple travelling late at night.

 The Bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha P Mayee had asked for an action taken report from the Commissioner of Police. This incident was reported in a newspaper.

The Court directed, “we call upon the city police chief to submit an action taken report in the matter where two traffic constables and a TRB jawan reported to have committed an act of extortion of ₹60,000 from a couple who were travelling in the city in a cab during night hours…“the newspaper report shows some disturbing facts that traffic police constables forcibly entered into the cab during a checking drive and threatened the couple to be booked for violation of Police Commissioner’s notification for travelling late at night.”

The action taken report, along with the affidavit of a gazetted officer from the office of the Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad has to be submitted before the next date of hearing on 11 September.

It has been reported that the cops had taken them to an isolated spot at night and demanded Rupees 2 Lakhs. However, they had settled for Rs. 60000 finally. The cops had also stopped the woman from breast- feeding their one year old son, according to the same report.
