Gurugram traffic police to further tighten enforcement in coming days to discipline traffic violators

Gurugram:  A unique traffic management initiative undertaken by the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) for Gurugram Traffic Police and supported by the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF) aims to revolutionise traffic management systems in Gurugram, strengthening road safety enforcement across 22 major intersections .

The scientific audit for these 22 intersections has been completed by Traffic Engineering Centre (TEC) and Organisation Development  Centre (ODC) established by Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE)   for Gurugram police at Traffic towers at the DC traffic office  as per the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Hyundai Motor India Foundation. Work for improving traffic management at two intersections including Rajiv Chowk and Shankar Chowk  has already started.

“The Traffic Engineering Centre (TEC) has been designed to scientifically audit develop sustainable traffic management system for Gurugram under the aegis of the Gurugram Traffic Police, where IRTE’s Road Safety Engineers observe traffic movement, violations, and behavioural issues of vulnerable road users, along with studying the causative factors related to congestion. These will be monitored and analysed through camera inputs of 218 junctions with the valuable support of the ICCC Gurugram.” Said Dr Rohit Baluja, President, IRTE while presenting the progress and outcomes of the Forensic Road Safety and Traffic Engineering Audit, a pioneering initiative led by IRTE engineers to promote scientific road safety management in the city.

As per the Easy roads project  the IRTE engineering team had provided expert support to the Gurugram Traffic Police in conducting forensic safety and traffic engineering audits across 22 major junctions and intersections. Reviewing and improving 15 km of key road stretches prone to congestion and risk. Rectifying identified blackspots to reduce accident occurrences. Developing safety and traffic management measures for school zones to ensure safer environments for children. Conducting feasibility studies on stakeholder proposals related to road safety and mobility.

The audit represents a bottom-up approach, focusing on understanding the causative and consequential factors of traffic violations and aligning corrective actions with Driving Regulations and Indian Roads Congress (IRC) Codes of Practice.

The event was graced by Mr Depender Singh Deshi, advisor, Urban development, Haryana Government  Mr. Vikas Arora, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Gurugram Police, as the chief guest, and Mr. Shyamal Mishra, IAS, CEO, Gurugram Metro Development Authority ( GMDA) , Dr Rajesh Mohan , Deputy commissioner of Police, Gurugram.Mr Saurabh S Sharma, domain head, Hyundai Motor India Limited and NHAi officals.

Mr Vikas Arora, Commissioner , Gurugram Police  speaking on the occasion said “In coming days Gurugram police will increase enforcement by deploying 10-15 officers at each traffic violation spot across the city for a week to challan and stop violations. The Gurugram police has also increased challans for drunk driving as 30,000 challans were issued in a year as compared to 4000 in previous year. 32 black spots have been recognized in Gurugram and are being rectified by improving road engineering and signages”.

Mr. Shyamal Mishra, IAS, CEO, Gurugram Metro Development Authority ( GMDA) speaking on the occasion said that GMDA  is all set to lend support to improving traffic in Gurugram. The IRTE and Traffic police also should find solutions for easing traffic on internal Gurugram roads especially new sectors near Dwarka Expressway especially at Dadi Sati chowk .
