Guwahati: The last war against drags is underway in the northeastern region of the country. Police have seized more than 100 crore heroines and drugs in different incidents in the northeast region of the country in the last six months. The manner in which Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has broken the back of the drug cartel coming to Assam from Myanmar via Mizoram has created a light of hope for Punjab. These smugglers try to smuggle drugs from Myanmar and send them to Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru via Mizoram. Since March this year, the Assam Rifles has apprehended 259 drug peddlers. According to an Assam Rifles official, smugglers from Myanmar smuggle yaba tablets (a type of drugs) as it is said to be in great demand in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. The drugs are to be smuggled from Myanmar to Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru via Mizoram, a senior Assam Rifles official said.

Meanwhile, continuing their efforts to curb the drug menace in this drive of the police, guwahati police in Assam’s Kamrup district seized huge quantities of drugs worth over Rs 15 crore on the outskirts of the city on November 5. According to police, drugs tablets were seized in Sonapur area, about 20 km from Guwahati city.Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Joint Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta launched an operation and intercepted a vehicle at Nazirakhat toll gate near Sonapur and recovered 60,000 drug tablets from the hidden chambers of the vehicle. On the other hand, a man identified as Mohammad Ajmal Khan, a resident of Manipur’s Thoubal district, has been arrested with the seized goods. Speaking to the media, police officials said the market value of the seized drugs has been pegged at around Rs 15 crore. On November 1, 2022, the Assam Police seized a huge quantity of heroin worth Rs 5 crore coming from Mizoram allegedly in a four-wheeler during a joint operation conducted by Ratabari, Patharkandi and RK Nagar police stations in Karimganj district. Accordingly, naka checking was initiated at several suspected link points connecting Karimganj with Mizoram. However, the seized vehicle somehow managed to cross the naka.
