Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has said that his government will bring a law under which protesters will have to pay the damages caused to public property during an agitation. Referring to a Supreme Court verdict, Mr Khattar said, nobody has the right to vandalise public property.

Haryana Chief Minister met Union Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday and discussed the farmers’ protest among other issues. Mr Khattar said, the state government has been planning to bring this law even before the farmers’ movement started.

BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh was the first state to bring the law to recover compensation from those who damage public and private property during protests and riots. Claims for compensation will be decided by designated ‘Claims Tribunals’ that will be authorised to investigate complaints and assess the damage.
