Vijayawada: A 24-year-old female, Kanaka Durga came to Manipal hospitals Vijayawada with recurrent bone fractures and unexplained Pancreatitis. On further evaluation Manipal doctors diagnosed that she was suffering from a parathyroid gland disorder, which was causing elevated calcium levels in the blood, which in turn resulted in the above complications.  Upon further scans, it was diagnosed as a Parathyroid Adenoma.

Parathyroid Adenoma is a tumour of parathyroid glands, which causes hyperparathyroidism, a condition where the parathyroid gland release high levels of calcium into our blood. This relatively rare condition affects close to around 1 to 2% of the adult population. The complications that patients might come across in such scenarios are Fractures (10%), Renal stones (13%), Pancreatitis (7%), and Muscle and bone pains (60%).

The surgery was carried by Dr V.V.K. Sandeep, Consultant ENT, Head & Neck Surgery – Manipal Hospitals Vijayawada, under the guidance of Dr Murali Krishna Ganguri, Consultant Diabetes & Endocrinology – Manipal Hospitals Vijayawada. This monitoring was overseen by Dr Anupama, Consultant Pathology, who finalized the successful outcome of the surgery.

Speaking about the surgery, Dr V.V.K. Sandeep, Consultant ENT, Head & Neck Surgery – Manipal Hospitals Vijayawada said, “This particular case was challenging as there was an abnormal enlargement of the gland, which poses a threat to the common carotid artery and recurrent laryngeal nerve while removing the gland. The surgery was carried out with utmost care and skill. We monitored parathyroid hormone levels through a special Intraoperative PTH monitoring which allows us to assess the adequacy of tumor removal (Hormone levels come to normal value within 10 minutes of tumor removal, indicative of a successful surgery).

Speaking about the surgery, Dr Murali Krishna Ganguri, Consultant Diabetes & Endocrinology – Manipal Hospitals Vijayawada said, “It is a rare case as the incidence is very low, this particular tumor can be easily missed as it is difficult to diagnose.  During the time of surgery, we were able to do the frozen section and Intra operative PTH with-in minutes with the help of Dr. Anupama, Consultant Pathologist. The patient has been under constant care right from pre-operative to post-operative stages.” He further added, “When calcium levels are more in the blood, it is very important to get it investigated”

Manipal Hospitals Vijayawada was successfully able to perform this surgery owing to the 24/7 state-of-the-art equipment and technology with a good team of doctors.
