Hima Das qualifies for Tokyo Olympics 2021

GUWAHATI : Sprinter Hima Das has qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Tokyo Olympics, which was to be held in 2020. But it was postponed due to the outbreak of corona virus. The Olympics will now be held in Japan’s capital Tokyo from July 23 to August 8. However, the selection of ‘ Dhiang Express ‘ for the Olympics has been formally announced today. Hima Das was left away from participating in the 400 metre race for a persistent back injury in any major event after his spectacular performance at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Hema Das became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the World Under 20 Championships held at Tampere in Finland in 2018. At the Asian Games 2018 held in Jakarta, Indonesia, Hema Das set a new national record in the 400m event in 50.7 seconds. Hema was able to win the silver medal in the 400 metre event final at the 2018 Asian Games. Later, Hema Das along with Mr. Puvamma, Sarita Gaikwad and VK Ama won the women’s 400 metre relay clocking at the Asian Games 2018. Hema also won the silver medal in the 400 metre mixed relay, which was held for the first time at the Asian Games. Later that year, Hema Das was awarded the Arjuna Award by President Ram Nath Kovind. Hema Das is only the second athlete from Assam after Bhogeshwar Barua to win the gold medal in an international event. Meanwhile, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has greeted Hema Das and hopes that she will have a better performance in the Tokyo Olympics 2021.
