Hong Kong Emerges as the Green Gateway: InvestHK Champions Mainland China’s Clean-Tech Global Ambitions

Hong Kong SAR: As climate urgency intensifies, artificial intelligence reshapes energy demand, and geopolitical volatility disrupts global supply chains, Hong Kong is cementing its role as the premier launchpad for Chinese mainland green technology enterprises eyeing international markets, according to Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK).

King Leung, Global Head of Financial Services, FinTech and Sustainability at InvestHK, identified three converging forces driving this opportunity. Conflict in the Middle East has accelerated the energy transition by disrupting oil supply chains. The AI revolution is generating massive electricity demand, spurring rapid innovation in data centres, energy storage and clean energy. And record-breaking summer heat across Europe—temperatures exceeding 40°C—is forcing industries to fast-track climate adaptation. Together, these pressures have created a rare opening for mainland enterprises with established strengths in solar power, energy storage, electric vehicles, wind energy and hydrogen technologies.

“Green technology carries lower geopolitical sensitivity than many other sectors and remains a blue-ocean field with vast untapped potential,” said Leung. “Hong Kong is uniquely positioned to help mainland enterprises transform these competitive strengths into international growth.”

The scale of global appetite is significant. Morgan Stanley’s 2026 Sustainable Signals survey found that 92% of individual investors worldwide now have an interest in sustainable investing—a record high. Hong Kong’s green finance ecosystem is well-placed to channel that capital: the city has topped Asia’s green and sustainable bond issuance league table for eight consecutive years, arranging approximately US$40 billion in 2025—around 40% of Asia’s total. As of Q1 2026, Hong Kong hosted 190 SFC-recognised ESG funds with assets under management of US$139.1 billion.

In June, InvestHK led its inaugural New Energy and Sustainability Business Mission to the United Kingdom, co-organised with the UK Department for Business and Trade. The two-week mission across London, Edinburgh and Aberdeen brought together 25 companies spanning battery storage, renewable energy, smart EV infrastructure and advanced materials. Over 80% of participants subsequently planned UK expansion within two years, with more than half moving to formalise investment commitments—a result that exceeded expectations and validated Hong Kong’s position as a two-way green investment corridor.

Looking ahead, InvestHK will lead a sustainability-focused delegation to Canada in September and launch a series of practical go-global workshops offering risk management guidance from banking, insurance and advisory professionals. “With Hong Kong as the showcase window,” Leung said, “we will bring the country’s most compelling green growth stories to the global stage, one by one.”
