Hundreds join justice rally for Dr Rahul Basumatary in Udalguri

Kokrajhar: Hundreds of students, guardians today staged a protest rally in Assam’s Udalguri demanding justice to Dr Rahul Basumatary, who was murdered August 29 last in Jorhat.

Organised by Daimond English School Udalguri Alumni Association, students from various institutions, guardians and locals participated in the protest with banners, festoon through the street of Udalguri town.

A memorandum was submitted to the chief minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Deputy commissioner office, Udalguri demanding proper investigation through a competent authority like CBI and compensation to the family members.

Dr Rahul Basumatary (26), an intern doctor at the JK Saikia Memorial Homeopathic Medical College, was found dead at his rented accommodation in Chandan Nagar in the Lichubari outpost area of Jorhat town on August 29 morning hours.

Dr. Basumatary hailed from Udalguri district. He is the only son of Nogen Basumatary and Tirala Basumatary from Village No 1 Santipur, P.O.-Udalguri, of Udalguri district.

Two persons were arrested in connection with the murder.

According to police, after a preliminary investigation, it was found that Basumatary was murdered on Friday night with a kitchen knife and his throat was slit.

“The incident came to light after the landlord found Basumatary’s bike missing from the compound. He went upstairs to inquire about it but instead found his body lying on the floor in a pool of blood, police has said.

Various organisations including the influential All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) have demanded proper investigation and justice.

Absu has few days back written to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal demanding quick justice for Dr Rahul Basumatary by constituting Special Investigation Team and to try the case in the fast-track court for quick delivery of justice.

The ABSU urged the government of Assam to take stringent action against the accused involved and punish as per the penal laws.
