ICG recovers Thai ‘Deep Ocean Tsunami Buoy’ from West Island of North Andaman

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has recovered a Thai ‘Deep Ocean Tsunami Buoy’ from the West Island of North Andaman. The Coast Guard launched a search operation to locate and recover the buoy. The buoy has been successfully recovered through CG Ship Rajveer on 19th July and towed the observing instrument to Diglipur.

The Buoy was deployed in Bay of Bengal by the National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC), Thailand which was reported to be adrift in the north Andaman Sea. Responding to the situation, the NDWC, Thailand approached the Directorate of Disaster Management in Port Blair to seek assistance of Indian Coast Guard for locating and recovery of the buoy.  

The buoy weighing 4000 kg and 2.6 Mt in diameter recovered is being handed over to India National Centre for Ocean Information Services, INCOIS for subsequent handing over to NDWC, Thailand
