IMD warns of heavy rains in some districts of Maharashtra

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rains in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and some other districts of Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Mumbai has surpassed its July 2014 record of 1,468.5mm rain for the all-time high monthly rainfall yesterday with intermittent intense rain spells.

Colaba observatory recorded intermittent intense spells through the day with 83.6 mm heavy rain while the santacruz observatory recorded 7.7 mm rain throughout yesterday and over the last 24 hours moderate rain was recorded in the suburbs and south Mumbai. 

According to Mumbai civic body has informed that the Tulsi lake, one of the seven reservoirs supplying drinking water to the metropolis, has overflowed due to incessant rains in Mumbai, including its catchment area, in the last few days. Tulsi is one of the smallest lakes in Mumbai, having a storage capacity of 8,046 million litres. The city gets 18 million litres of water from the lake everyday. It is situated in Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
