Instamart Rakhi Orders Surge 300% as Premium Gifting Replaces Traditional Threads

0 4

Instamart, Swiggy’s quick-commerce platform, recorded nearly 300% year-on-year growth in Rakhi orders ahead of Raksha Bandhan 2026, signaling a major shift toward premium gifting over traditional festivities. The platform’s data reveals how India is embracing quick commerce for increasingly sophisticated festive shopping needs.

Peak demand hit at 12:01 PM on August 28, when 857 rakhis were ordered per minute as last-minute shoppers flooded the app. While traditional sweets like chocolates and mithai saw 30% week-on-week growth, premium categories experienced explosive expansion: designer rakhis surged 130%, gift hampers rose 85%, and smartwatch orders nearly doubled at 99%.

Hyderabad led rakhi orders among Indian cities, followed by Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Gurgaon, with significant demand also emerging from non-metro markets. This geographic spread indicates quick commerce’s growing reach beyond major metropolitan areas.

The Premium Pivot

The traditional thread-and-sweets combination is giving way to sophisticated keepsakes. Precious metals dominated consumer preferences, with convertible rakhi-to-pendant designs, sterling silver Trishul and Surya motifs, and Swarovski-studded Lumba variants experiencing strong demand. These premium offerings now compete with traditional rakhis as consumers seek gifts that provide lasting value beyond the festival day.

Remarkable Consumer Behavior

● The Midnight Shopper: Bengaluru’s earliest committer placed their first order just 11 seconds past midnight on August 21, then doubled down with another order at the following midnight.

● The Mega Cart: One Mumbai customer ordered 118 individual rakhis in a single transaction.

● The Gold Standard: Bengaluru saw the highest-value rakhi-only purchase—five 24-karat gold coin rakhis totaling ₹10,995.

● The Silver Collector: A Gurgaon shopper bought 20 premium silver rakhis worth ₹10,780 in one order.

● The Eclectic Ensemble: A Hyderabad buyer assembled a diverse collection of 109 rakhis, ranging from Batman-themed kids’ bands to Swarovski-studded lumbas and traditional Rudrakshas, for ₹9,790.

● Ultimate Gift Basket: Gurgaon secured the title for largest overall basket with a ₹14,630 mega-cart featuring gold coin rakhis, luxury skincare, artisanal chocolates, and plush toys.

This premiumization trend aligns with Instamart’s “Switch” proposition, which aims to elevate product quality and expand beyond grocery top-ups into higher-margin non-food categories. The platform has curated premium festive edits from brands including Swarovski, GIVA, Nestasia, Kalyan Jewellers, and Palmonas to meet evolving consumer expectations.

The data demonstrates how quick-commerce platforms are successfully expanding into high-value, seasonal impulse retailing, serving not just everyday needs but also sophisticated festive shopping occasions that demand both speed and quality.
