International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) 2026 was observed across Thiruvananthapuram Division, Southern Railway on Tuesday , 09th June 2026, with a series of awareness initiatives aimed at promoting safe behaviour at railway level crossings and preventing accidents caused by unsafe road-user practices.
ILCAD is a global safety campaign dedicated to reducing accidents and fatalities at level crossings by educating road users about the risks associated with violating safety rules. The observance reinforced a simple but critical message: most level crossing accidents are preventable through alertness, patience and strict adherence to safety regulations.
As part of the campaign, awareness drives were conducted at level crossings across the Division to sensitise motorists, pedestrians and other road users on the importance of stopping at closed gates, obeying warning signals and allowing the safe passage of trains.
The campaign highlighted that while railways continue to strengthen safety infrastructure through interlocked gates, warning systems and other protective measures, safety ultimately depends on responsible behaviour by road users. Attempting to cross tracks after warning signals are activated, bypassing closed gates or trespassing on railway tracks can have fatal consequences.
The Safety Branch of Thiruvananthapuram Division, organised public awareness campaigns and road-user interactions. Public announcements were organized and educational materials highlighting safe practices and the legal consequences of violating level crossing regulations were also disseminated.
Thiruvananthapuram Division reiterates its commitment to strengthening safety awareness and appeals to all road users to treat level crossing safety as a shared responsibility. A few moments of patience at a level crossing can prevent accidents, protect lives and ensure safer road-rail interaction for all.
