Karma Foundation Launches Digital Platform to Strengthen End-to-End Care for Community Animals
Pune-based animal welfare organisation Karma Foundation has launched a digital platform aimed at strengthening the end-to-end care of community animals, integrating rescue, medical treatment, and reintegration into a single, structured system.
The platform is designed to bring greater efficiency and accountability to animal care operations by tracking each stage of an animal’s journey from rescue and treatment to its eventual return to the exact location it was picked up from. Notably, the system records and counts an animal as a completed case only after it has been successfully treated and released back into its original territory, ensuring accurate outcome-based tracking.
Under the initiative, injured, sick, or distressed animals are rescued and brought to the foundation’s veterinary facility for detailed medical assessment. Based on their condition, animals receive appropriate treatment, including surgeries, medication, wound care, and nutritional support. Once stabilised, they are prepared for release and returned to the locations they were rescued from, wherever medically feasible.
As part of the care process, animals are also sterilised, vaccinated against rabies, and microchipped for identification, supporting both long-term tracking and responsible population management.
Commenting on the launch, Priya Kailad, Founder and President, Karma Foundation, said, “Our focus is not just on treating animals, but on completing the entire cycle of care in a structured and accountable way. Through this platform, we track every animal from rescue to recovery and, most importantly, its safe return to the exact location it came from. We consider a case complete only after the animal is successfully reintegrated into its territory. This helps us measure real outcomes while ensuring animals are not unnecessarily displaced. By combining on-ground care with data-led tracking, we aim to build a humane and scalable model for urban animal management.”
Currently being implemented in Pune, the platform supports the foundation’s ongoing rescue efforts involving street dogs, cats, and other animals. Through its initiatives, Karma Foundation has treated and rehabilitated numerous animals, many of which have been successfully returned to their communities.
The platform has been developed as a scalable framework, combining on-ground intervention with structured data tracking to improve efficiency, transparency, and long-term impact.
At a time when Indian cities are increasingly exploring technology-driven solutions to manage stray animal populations, such integrated models highlight the importance of combining digital systems with on-ground care delivery and measurable outcomes to achieve sustainable results.
