Koochi: The Kerala High Court today enhanced the life sentence awarded to nine persons convicted by the trial court in connection with the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T P Chandrasekharan, who was hacked to death in May 2012.

A Division Bench comprising Justices A K Jayashankaran Nambiar and Kauser Edappagath said in the order that the right of the convicts to claim remission on their sentence to life imprisonment shall be restricted for 20 years, so that they will be entitled to a release only after completing that period.

The Court also sentenced two other CPI-M local leaders, who were part of the conspiracy to eliminate the RMP leader, to life imprisonment without curtailing their right to remission, considering their advanced age and health.

All the sentences awarded to the convicts under various sections of the IPC will run concurrently. The Division Bench also ordered the convicts to pay a fine amounting from one to two lakh rupees, a part of which was ordered to be paid to the wife and son of the slain leader.

Chandrasekharan, who broke away from the CPI-M to form the RMP was hacked to death on May 4, 2012, allegedly at the behest of the CPI-M.
