KIMS Hospitals Launches Thane’s First Radioiodine Therapy Ward for Thyroid Cancer Patients Dedicated Nuclear Medicine Facility Brings Advanced Post-Surgical Treatment Closer to Patients Across Thane Region
In a significant step towards improving access to specialised cancer care, KIMS Hospitals, Thane has launched Thane’s first dedicated Radioiodine (Iodine-131) Therapy Ward under its Department of Nuclear Medicine. The facility is expected to benefit thyroid cancer patients from Thane and neighbouring districts by providing advanced post-surgical treatment closer to home.
Thyroid cancer is among the most treatable cancers when diagnosed early and managed appropriately. While its incidence is relatively low—around five cases per one lakh population—it is seen more frequently in women. In many patients, treatment does not end with surgery. Following complete removal of the thyroid gland, Radioiodine (Iodine-131) therapy is often recommended to destroy any remaining thyroid tissue or microscopic cancer cells, thereby reducing the risk of recurrence.
Since Radioiodine therapy involves the use of radioactive iodine, it must be administered in a specially designed isolation ward approved by the competent government regulatory authorities, ensuring the safety of patients, healthcare workers and the public.
Until now, patients from Thane and nearby regions often had to travel to Mumbai or other cities for this specialised treatment, leading to inconvenience, additional costs and, in some cases, delays because of limited availability and long waiting periods. The newly launched Radioiodine Therapy Ward at KIMS Hospitals addresses this gap by bringing the service closer to patients.

This will enable timely treatment while ensuring the highest standards of radiation safety.”
