Seoul  – Korean Air hosted the inaugural K-FDM (Flight Data Monitoring) Seminar at its Seoul headquarters, bringing together aviation stakeholders to establish a nationwide flight data sharing framework.

The event brought together approximately 80 representatives from South Korea’s the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology (KIAST), and flight data analysts from 13 domestic airlines.

FDM is a flight safety management system that analyzes operational metrics, including control inputs, meteorological conditions, and terrain data, to identify and mitigate potential flight risks. The seminar marked the first comprehensive industry exchange of FDM technology and analytical methodologies among South Korean operators ahead of the launch of the integrated Korean Air in December.

“This inaugural seminar marks a critical step in consolidating decentralized data into a cohesive national safety network,” said Bennet Allen Walsh, Senior Vice President and Head of Corporate Aviation Safety & Security at Korean Air. “It establishes the foundation for expanding our collaborative safety framework on a global scale.”

Technical sessions focused on practical FDM applications in flight and operational improvement. Participants examined the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in data analysis, emphasizing the necessity of precise baseline criteria and algorithmic verification protocols. Discussions also addressed key initiatives to develop data-driven “Just Culture” to support voluntary pilot reporting, alongside proposals for joint industry-academia safety research.

The seminar was supported by GE Aerospace and Teledyne Controls, presenting technical solutions for flight data management. Going forward, the participating airlines will form a working group to maintain this collaboration, focusing on building a national data-sharing ecosystem and advancing safety standards.
