L&T Precision Engineering & Systems (PES) has delivered INS Samarthak, the first-of-class multi-purpose vessel (MPV) for the Indian Navy, from its Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai. The handover, attended by senior officials from the Navy and L&T, marks a key milestone in strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
Conceptualised, engineered and built entirely in-house at L&T’s Warship Design Centre and Kattupalli Shipyard, INS Samarthak features over 75% indigenous content, aligning with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. Named ‘Samarthak’—meaning ‘supporter’—the vessel is a specialised multi-role platform designed to support technology development and enhance the Navy’s future combat readiness.
Beyond testing and trials, the ship will support maritime surveillance, patrolling, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), and environmental protection. Equipped with a state-of-the-art Dynamic Positioning System, it offers precise control during complex marine manoeuvres, combining advanced capability with operational versatility.

L&T’s Kattupalli Shipyard is among India’s most advanced integrated shipbuilding and repair facilities. It is currently building the second MPV and three Cadet Training Ships for the Indian Navy.
