Maharashtra records single-day spike of 6,555 new COVID-19 cases

Maharashtra’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2,06,619 with the single-day spike of 6,555 new cases on Sunday. With the death of 151 more patients, the state”s fatality count rose to 8,822. As per the state health Department, a total of 3,658 patients were discharged from hospitals post recovery on Sunday, which took the number of recovered persons to 1,11,740 so far.

Of the total number of 151 deaths reported during the day, 69 were from Mumbai alone, while 20 from Pune. Out of the total 6,555 new cases, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Mumbai city, accounted for the highest 3,941 cases, taking its total to 1,45,769 and death toll to 6,401 deaths.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the rising number of patients, BMC has started Rapid Antigen testing for Covid 19 in Mumbai. ICMR approved 1 lakh Rapid Antigen testing kits have been  procured for this purpose. This test is recommended for all symptomatic Covid 19 suspects and asymptomatic High risk contacts with Comorbidity.

This test is being conducted in the medical colleges, hospitals and containment zones at present. It will be gradually expanded to cover more areas. If the test is negative in a symptomatic Covid – 19 suspect, then the second sample will be taken and sent for RT-PCR test. A total of 724 tests have been conducted so far.
