Nagaland’s “Raja Mirch” exported to London

GUWAHATI : The famous ‘Bhot Jolokia’ (a hot chilli from Assam) and Naga chilli (a cold variety of Nagaland) were first exported from Guwahati to London via Air India flight from the international cargo complex of LBBI airport. A consignment of the famous King Mirch of Nagaland (also known as Bhut Jolokia) has been exported from the state to London via Guwahati in Assam. The consignment was reportedly sourced from tanning in Peren district and packaged by APEDA in Guwahati on Wednesday. Ravi Kant, Regional Executive Director, Airports Authority of India, North East Region said that the occasion is special in nature as the geographical index ‘Bhot Jolokia’ being a unique product of the North East is being exported from Airports Authority of India (AAI). This variety of chillies is considered to be one of the hottest chillies of the high measuring word in the Scoville Heat Unit (SU).

Often known as “Ghost Jolokia”, it has also found geographical indication authentication in 2008. A consignment of ‘Raja Mirch’ of Nagaland was exported from Guwahati to London for the first time on Wednesday. King Mirch of Nagaland is also known as King Chile, Ghost Jolokia and Ghost Paper. It is considered to be the spicy chilli in the world. The Ministry of Commerce informed that this is aimed at promoting export of Geographical Indication (GI) products of North Eastern Region. The consignment of King Chile was ordered from Tening in Peren district of Nagaland. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his happiness. PM Modi wrote, “Great news.

It was packed in a PACKHOUSE aided by APEDA in Guwahati. APEDA coordinated the export consignment of King Chile with the help of Nagaland State Agricultural Marketing Board (NSAMB).
