Number of Amur Falcon visiting Umrangsu continues to increase remarkably

Haflong : It is a very good news for the bird’s watchers and birds lovers that number of Amur Falcon visiting Umrangsu have been increasing every year imply, killing of birds decreased remarkably confirmed Sri Phomen Kemprai, Range Officer, Umrangsu Forest Range.

Roosting of Amur Falcon in Umrangso area is a story of long past. People used to kill these birds for flesh and were continued for long though it was not identified as Amur Falcon. There was no mass killing as the people used air-gun or catapult.

After series of awareness campaigns along with Forest Department’s active participation killing of these birds almost stopped.

This year from October 10, they started their roosting at Tungbung and adjacent places near Umrangsu reservoir which expected to be continued till November 25.

Visitors from neighbouring stated like Meghalaya, Nagaland besides from own state Assam have been vising the place for watching these unique raptors.

Range Officer, Umrangsu Forest Range Sri Kemprai said the forest personals along with battalions have been doing protection duty in two shift during the night hours so that none can kill the birds during their roosting period. He also informed that the Chief Conservator of Forest Sri M Tungnung IFS, visited the roosting place and instructed to keep vigil and also to provide possible help to the tourists visiting the place to watch the birds.
