Kolkata: In a campus that prides itself on intellect and curiosity, the usually quiet corridors of The Heritage College, Kolkata’s library resonated with applause on this Librarians’ Day, 12th August 2025. What is often a silent sanctuary for thought became the venue for a celebration that was both heartfelt and symbolic — honouring not just the librarians who guard its shelves, but also the students who breathe life into them.
The day, observed nationwide to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan — the father of Library Science in India — took on a distinctive flavour here. In an unprecedented move, the college had decided to felicitate its most discerning library users, recognising students whose consistent engagement with books, journals, and research resources that will stand out as exemplary.
Speaking at the occasion, Principal of the College, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Paul captured the emotional essence of the event stating, “A library is not merely a place where books are kept; it is a living organism, pulsing with the thoughts and dreams of generations. Our students who walk these aisles day after day, seeking not just answers but questions, are the true inheritors of this legacy. By celebrating them, we are celebrating the very spirit of learning.”
Mr.Binod Bihari das Advisor – Library, recalled how some of these students had become familiar figures at the reading tables, often found lost in the pages of a rare text or meticulously cross-referencing material for their projects. reflecting on the essence of Librarians Day, he said, “They remind us that in an age of instant information, there is still immense value in the slow, deliberate act of reading.”
The event attended by faculty, staff, and students, was complemented by a curated display of some of the rare books — a tangible reminder of the library’s role as the intellectual heartbeat of the campus.
In celebrating both the keepers and the seekers of knowledge, The Heritage College sent out a quiet but powerful message: that in the journey of education, curiosity is the most precious credential.
