KOCHI: Hibi Eden MP stated that the true progress of a nation should be measured through the happiness index of its people rather than large-scale infrastructure development. He was speaking after inaugurating ‘The Open Mind’ program, jointly organized by the Indian Association of Clinical Psychologists–Kerala Region (Central Zone) and Jain University, Kochi, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day.
Highlighting healthcare perspectives, he noted that although Kerala is at the forefront of the health sector, society’s attitude toward mental health treatment needs to change. He emphasized that there are certain mental health conditions more severe than cancer, and these must be openly discussed and treated.
MLA and actor Ramesh Pisharody remarked that true mental health lies in the ability to protect one’s own mental state without succumbing to external circumstances. He added that while he only interacted with happy people during his career as an artist, he now works among people in society who experience numerous struggles and sorrows.
The event also marked the inauguration of Jain University Kochi’s ‘Be Happy Project’ and ‘The Happiness Clinic.’ The clinic aims to improve the mental health of students while fostering strong human connections and building a healthy community across campuses. These initiatives are designed around the core principles of inclusion, empathy, and maintaining good health.
Dr. Tom Joseph, Director of New Initiatives at Jain University, stated that giving greater consideration and attention to mental health is essential. He pointed out that while many foreign countries have dedicated ministries for mental health, in our country it remains merely a part of general public health. He added that the primary objective of any university should be to formulate solutions to society’s real-world problems right from within the campus.
The ‘Open Mind’ program also saw participation from Dr. Thomas Ranjith (Pediatrics Specialist), K. Viswanath (Assistant Editor at Mathrubhumi and Writer), Dr. Mithila Jose, Barsleeby Alex (President, IACP-KR), and Zaileshia G. (Program Convener, Open Mind).
